A bath towel woven in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, Japan's most celebrated towel-making region, featuring shippo, one of the oldest auspicious patterns in Japanese design.

Shippo, a pattern of lasting harmony

Shippo is made of endlessly overlapping circles, each linked to the next without a break. Its name refers to the "seven treasures" of Buddhist tradition, and for centuries it has been cherished in Japan as a symbol of harmony, good relationships, and prosperity that continues without end. It appears on kimono, ceramics, and traditional crafts, and carries a quiet wish for happiness wherever it is used.

Woven into the towel itself

Rather than being printed, the pattern is created through mon-ori, a jacquard weaving technique for which Imabari is known. The circles rise softly from the surface in tone-on-tone white, revealing themselves through light and texture. The result is an understated, elegant towel that feels special without being showy.
